Prof. Liu's research interests include AI for atmospheric chemistry, 2D/3D processing, and low/high-level computer vision.
Associate Professor
Emilia Blåsten is an associate professor and mathematician at LUT University. She does research in applied mathematics, with a focus on wave scattering and inverse problems. She brings knowledge of mathematical methods and their limitations. In addition to theoretical work, she has collaborated with civil engineers during her postdoctoral research in Hong Kong.
post-doctoral
Taiwo Ashu (PhD) is a post-doctoral urban air quality modelling researcher. Her work focuses on pollution modelling in urban areas using SOSAA. The long-term goal of her project is to develop a machine learning surrogate model for SOSAA to enhance pollution modelling efficiency and incorporate it into the Earth System Climate Model.
Phd Student
Petri Clusius started his physics studies in 2016 and did his bachelor thesis about modelling atmospheric new particle formation in Hyytiälä due to ammonia and sulfuric acid. The focus in his master thesis was on the development of the new Atmospherically Relevant Chemistry and Aerosol Box Model – ARCA box. In his PhD studies he is focusing now on the contributing role of biogenic hydrocarbons emitted from forests to future climate warming.
Phd Student
Benjamin Foreback started his PhD at INAR in 2018. He studies severe air pollution events in megacities like Beijing, China. In his research, he uses the FLEXPART-SOSAA modelling system to investigate the emission, transport, chemical and physical processes to improve our knowledge of the lifecycles of severe haze.
PhD Student
Valery Ashu completed his master's degree in Computational Engineering from Lappeenranta University of Technology in the summer of 2023. The thesis focused on identifying hidden parameters in discrete model data with Neural networks. In autumn 2023, he started his doctoral studies at AMC Lahti on optimizing chemistry codes related to the autoxidation of volatile organic compounds.
PhD Student
Zeqi obtained the Master of Science degree in Air Pollution Management and Control in November 2020, with a research focus on pollution data analysis. She started her doctoral studies at AMC Lahti in autumn 2023 on the development of a multi-phase chemistry scheme by applying machine learning techniques.
PhD Student
Wenqing Peng joined AMC-Lahti as a PhD student in 2024. His research interests include analysing atmospheric chemistry with deep learning and building surrogate models. He previously completed an MSc in High-Performance Computing at EPCC of the University of Edinburgh and worked as a software engineer at Dell Research Shanghai.
PhD Student
Haitong Zhang is a PhD student in Atmospheric Science at the University of Helsinki's Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR), having joined AMC in September 2024. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering from Sichuan University and a Master's degree from the National University of Singapore. Her research focuses on atmospheric chemistry and aerosol dynamics in China, utilizing advanced modeling techniques.
PhD Student
Ammar joined AMC-Lahti as a PhD student in 2024. His research focuses on building a neural network-based emulator to improve predictive models for air quality and Earth systems. With an engineering background in Big Data and Artificial Intelligence from the University of Poitiers and CNAM, he is now leveraging AI to advance atmospheric modeling.
PhD Student
Jenni Köykkä started at LUT as a PhD student in applied chemistry in 2024. Her research will be focusing on establishing a new particle-phase module for organic chemistry, by applying Bayesian analysis and using machine-learning techniques via generative AI. She earned her first Master of Science in Mathematics in 2024 and is about to earn her second MSc in Ecology, both at the University of Jyväskylä.
PhD Student
Samuel Agenorwoth joined LUT University as a PhD student in Mathematics in 2024. His research focuses on uncertainty quantification in pipe imaging. He previously earned an International Double Master’s degree under the RealMaths Consortium, completing an MSc in Mathematical Engineering at the University of L'Aquila, Italy, and an MSc in Mathematics at Karlstad University, Sweden. His master’s thesis centered on tracer transport in fractured porous media, where he developed and simulated models for adsorption-convection-diffusion processes in fractured porous media.
